Objectives
The study cycle in Contemporary Philosophy – Values and Society has two main objectives. First, aims to promote students' interest in research in nuclear domains of Philosophy, such as Ethics, Political Philosophy, Aesthetics, Epistemology, Ontology and the Philosophical Hermeneutics. To this end, seeks to enable students with a set of concepts, theories, methodologies and fundamental problems of Western philosophical thought. Second, seeks to
respond to the expectations of the high-ranking civil servants and of the corporate sector, as well as recent graduates, especially in Philosophy, that aims to deepen their scientific preparation, with special emphasis on the theme of values, providing the development of skills, oral and written, that are fundamental to a reflective and critical intervention in contemporary society.
Access Requirements
Those who meet the following conditions may apply to the cycle of studies that leads to the mestre degree:
a) Holders of the licenciado (bachelor) degree in Philosophy, European Studies and International Politics, History, Cultural Patrimony, Sociology, Social Communication and Culture, Basic Education, or related fields, or legally equivalent qualifications;
b) Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum vitae that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the University of Azores as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.

Learning Outcomes
Regarding the learning outcomes, the study cycle aims to the deepening of knowledge in the nuclear areas of Philosophy. Therefore, seeks to furnish students with a set of concepts, theories, methodologies and fundamental problems of Western philosophical thought. The aim is also the development of critical and reflective capabilities on relevant philosophical issues and, above all, ensuring skills, oral and written, required for the students’ research and decisive to the writing of the dissertation.
These objectives are operationalized in the curricular units, based in scientific methodologies, in depth investigation and, especially, in the students' autonomous research work.
The information on the degree of fulfilment of the learning outcomes is achieved through the performance of students in the different curricular units and, especially, at the public examination of the masters’ thesis.
