MAIN RESEARCH

In this section of the Department of Biology of the University of the Azores, research interests are diverse.

The ecotoxicology group focus on anthropogenic and natural pollution, especially related to volcanic activity, with a special interest in biomarkers and bioindicators for heavy metal exposure and effects.

The invertebrate reproduction group studies are on the fitness and reproductive cycle of endemic species of molluscs and crustaceans.

The paleontology and biogeography group investigates the fossils of the oldest island of the Azores (Santa Maria) and the biogeographical affinities among the marine malacofauna of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean.

The systematics and evolution group is focused on the description of new endemic species of the Azores and their evolutionary paths.
